Very much like Independence Day in the United States, Bastille Day is a National holiday in France celebrating the start of a new government.
France was once ruled by kings and queens and the people were not happy with decisions made by the king and queen. It was never in the interest of the people. If you didn't agree with the decisions of the king and queen you were thrown into the "Bastille" a prison. In rebellion to the atrocities made by the king and queen on July 14, 1789 the citizens of France gathered together and stormed the Bastille.
As we in the United States celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence as the beginning of the American Revolution, the people in France celebrate the storming of the Bastille as the beginning of the French Revolution. The revolutions brought great changes. Kings and queens were no longer in rule. The people were able to rule themselves and make their own decisions.
